STRICTER FINES FOR SPEEDING CONVICTIONS

Today new penalties come into force which increases the fines for speeding, as handed down by the Sentencing Council. Fines were fixed penalties, however the new speeding fines will be based on your income.

If you are caught driving less than 10 miles over the speed limit the fine will be calculated based on 25-75% of your income and you also incur three points on your licence.

If you are caught driving 10-20 miles over the speed limit the fine will be calculated based on 125% of your income and you are also at risk of disqualification for 7 to 28 days or alternatively you can incur 4-6 points on your licence.

If you are caught driving over 21 miles over the speed limit then the fine will be calculated based on 175% of your income and again you risk being disqualified in excess of 56 days or incurring 6 points on your licence.

The fines will be capped at £1,000 for speeding on local roads and £2,500 for speeding on motorways

For a first offence of speeding the police do have discretion to offer a speed awareness course. This remains unchanged under the new guidelines.
